WHITE CANES

HMP offers two types of canes; a folding cane and a rigid cane. Our canes are made of tempered 1/2-inch aircraft aluminum tubing and are light and easy to handle. They have a white Scotchlite covering and six inches of fluorescent red at the bottom. Each has a flexible, rubber golf handle with elastic wrist loop. Each cane comes with the tip of your choice, with the exception of the bearing tip, which is sold separately. Unless otherwise requested, the cylinder tip will come with each cane.

The Folding Cane

The folding cane is designed to collapse into four sections. The precision fitted joints and strong, double cord that runs through the center of the cane ensures a constant tight fit that resembles the feel of the rigid cane. This cane can be folded and secured with the wrist loop for compact storing when not in use.

The Rigid Cane

The rigid cane is a very sturdy, non-jointed cane that offers strength and stability, as well as the ability to relay important information about the environment you are traveling through.

All canes are sized as closely as possible to your requested length, measured in increments of 2 inches. Since you choose the tip you would like, the finished length could be slightly longer or shorter than your requested length. Our folding canes come in lengths of 36 to 60 inches. Rigid canes are available in 20-60 lengths. Both canes can be obtained in "special order" sizes in some instances. We strive to give you a cane as close to the requested length as possible.

STANDARD AND SLIDE OVER CANE TIPS

Picture of the cylinder tip Most of the tips we sell are manufactured specificly for us. Our marshmallow and ball tips come in two hole sizes. The standard tips, red in color, have a 1/2-inch diameter hole and fit directly over the cane shaft. The slide-over, white or off-white color versions, have a 5/8-inch diameter hole and are designed to fit over the standard cylinder tip. Please specify which version you will need if you order one of these tips.

THE BALL TIP

Picture of the red ball tip The ball tip was originally designed for rural travel over rough or uneven ground such as grass, dirt, gravel, snow, etc. Extensive testing has proven that the large outer diameter provides for smoother and easier use whether in rural or city travel. The ball glides over cracks in the sidewalk, tiled floors, and anywhere smaller cane tips get caught and cause unnecessary interruption of motion. The injection molded ball tip has an outer diameter of 2.25 inches and is hollow to reduce the weight; each ball weighs just over 1 ounce. The ball tip is made of high viscosity nylon to improve durability. The average life is about 3-4 months with regular use and periodic rotation of the ball.

THE MARSHMALLOW TIP

Picture of the red marshmallow tip The marshmallow tip is specifically designed for city travel, (cement, concrete, and other hard surfaces). Its beveled end allows the cane to slide over all those cracks; lumps and bumps as in carpeting, tile flooring and cracked sidewalks that the smaller tips get caught in. The marshmallow is also injection molded of high- viscosity, low-friction nylon and has a solid body. It has an outer diameter of 1.25 inches, 1.5 inches in length and weighs about 1 ounce. The average life is about 4- 5 months with regular use and periodic rotation of the tip.

THE MUSHROOM TIP

Picture of the mushroom tip The mushroom tip is designed specifically for distance travel. The rounded end slides easily over almost all surfaces. This injection-molded tip has an outer diameter of 1.5 inches, an overall length of 3 inches. It has an inner hole diameter of 1/2-inch (standard size), and weighs about 1.3 ounces. It closely resembles a giant mushroom, hence, its name. Being solid and made of low-friction nylon, the life span is admirable!

THE METAL GLIDE ADAPTOR (MGA) TIP

Picture of the adaptor with tip The MGA is made of nylon and is used to alter the end of a standard 1/2-inch cane so that an NFB, (National Federation of the Blind), metal glide tip can be used. This will allow those who like the versatility of the NFB metal glide tip to use it on a 1/2-inch diameter cane. The assembled unit, one NFB metal glide tip and one adaptor, measures 1.5 inches long and weighs about 1.2 ounces.

THE BEARING TIP

Picture of the bearing tip The bearing tip assembly uses a standard marshmallow tip body adapted to fit a high-quality sealed metal bearing. This bearing will permit the tip to revolve around the cane shaft increasing durability and ease of use. Research shows that this tip's ability to revolve around the cane shaft makes it extremely useful in constant contact situations. It comes with a 1/2-inch hole only (standard model) and weighs approximately 1.6 ounces. Since the bearing should last much longer than the outer body, we offer replacement nylon caps (marshmallows) for this assembly.
